The coronavirus has been a social game changer, but “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult is also a game changer in a different way. The book examines race, prejudice, privilege and justice. The novel tells the story of Ruth, a very experienced African American labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital, who is told that she could not tend to a newborn whose parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth to touch their baby. The next day, the child goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is by herself in the nursery. She hesitates before performing CPR and is eventually charged with a major crime. What is Ruth’s fate?

In January, Compass Consulting Services launched a new concept of holding lively book discussions. The books’ primary theme will deal with issues concerning gender, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomics and other aspects of diversity, equity and inclusion.
